Dr. Sheila Ommeh, 2008 AWARD Fellow, Kenya

Dr. Sheila Ommeh has moved to a new role as researcher/lecturer at the Institute of Biotechnology Research at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. 

“I am really excited since I believe this will give me the opportunity to work closely with farmers at the grassroots level to deliver to them what I have been advocating for—better poultry.” Ommeh, a molecular geneticist whose research focuses on breeding disease and drought-resistant indigenous chickens, previously served at the International Livestock Research Institute.

Dr. Susan Ikerra, 2008 AWARD Fellow, Tanzania

Dr. Susan Ikerra was recently appointed as the Executive Director for the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

“It was my dream when I joined AWARD to reach the highest position,” says Ikerra. “I would like to thank AWARD for the opportunity to realize my goals.”

Dr. Mojisola Olayinka Edema, 2009 AWARD Fellow, Nigeria

Dr. Mojisola Olayinka Edema received a COMSTECH/Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) research grant recently. A senior lecturer at the Federal University of Technology’s Department of Food Science and Technology, Edema won for her work on development of starter cultures for underutilized millet sourdough processing.

“I must thank Professor John Taylor for his critique of my proposal, which I submitted last August while working with him at the University of Pretoria during my AWARD-sponsored research placement,” says Edema. “His lessons in hypothesis formulation and review of my research proposal were invaluable. This grant is also part of the fruits of AWARD for me. I read my notes from the AWARD Scientific Writing Course before completing the TWAS form, and submitted it with input from Professor Taylor. Thank you all for your support.”

Dr. Mary Makokha, 2011 AWARD Fellow, Kenya

Dr. Mary Makokha was awarded a research grant from the Stockholm-based International Foundation for Science for her work with water management.

“Thanks to AWARD for helping me to improve my proposal-writing skills,” says Makokha, a lecturer in water and environmental engineering at Kenyatta University.

Dr. Kehinde Moyib, 2010 AWARD Fellow, Nigeria

Dr. Kehinde Moyib gave an oral presentation at the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America 2011 International Annual Meetings held in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.A., on the “Genetic Variation of Postharvest Physiological Deterioration in a Cassava Germplasm.”

Ebere Ekweagwu, 2011 AWARD Fellow, Nigeria

Ebere Ekweagwu, a nutritionist, will give an oral presentation on the “Dietary Habits and Nutritional Status of School-aged Children in Onchocerciasis-endemic Communities of Ebonyi State, Nigeria” at the 16th International Congress of Dietetics in Sydney, Australia in September, 2012.

“I am very excited, because this will be my first opportunity to share the results of my research work outside of Nigeria,” says Ekweagwu. “Thanks to AWARD for creating the platform for this great opportunity.”
